History Of Roulette

Blaise Pascal - Inventor of the Roulette Wheel

The true home of roulette is Monte Carlo, it was here that gambling entrepreneur Francois Blanc and his son, Camille, introduced the wheel to the world-famous casino they established for Charles III, Prince of Monaco, in 1861.

Although early versions of roulette date as far back as ancient Rome, and possibly beyond, the game as we know it has origins in late 18th-century France, from where immigrants took the game to New Orleans in around 1800. The wheel is thought to have been invented by the French mathematician and scientist Blaine Pascal, in researching his theories of perpetual motion. Roulette was played with two zero pockets until Louis Blanc (brother of Francois) modified the wheel in 1842, after which one zero became the norm in Europe (see page 32). Today, the double-zero game is still played throughout the US and it is the version described on the following pages. The European version is significantly different, and is much more favourable to the player.
